The determined and focused Caretaker Committee of the Imo state Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will on Friday September 17 commission the newly renovated and modern, digitally equipped conference hall with a cyber café centre at the union’s secretariat at 14 Commissioners’ quarters located along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri.
The commissioning of the conference hall and cyber café will offer media practitioners in the state and allied workers, clients, friends, students of the International institute of Journalism Owerri and members of the public unhindered access to the media, Information or communication facilities.
Armed with the determination and zeal to repossess the NUJ secretariat and reposition media practice in the state, the Comrade Precious Nwadike led Caretaker Committee began the renovation at the secretariat along Port Harcourt which some enemies or dissidents of the union had pottered to sell for whopping sum of a money, on June 16, 2021.
A release issued by the Caretaker Committee signed by the Chairman Comrade Precious Nwadike and Secretary Comrade Austin Okoro reveals that the Union which flagged off the renovation of the Port Harcourt Road Secretariat on June 16, 2021 will, aside unveiling the conference hall, commission the Cyber Cafe and ICT Centre at the secretariat for the use of members and the general public.
The release reads in part,”Upon commissioning, the Conference Hall will be available for rent at an affordable rate for members of the public who may wish to use the facility. The Conference hall will also be available for other purposes such as board meetings of organizations, corporate workshops and executive training programs. The Council will offer 30% discount to non-governmental organizations that may wish to make use of the facility.
“It would be recalled that the Mr Innocent Igwe-led executive, with the tacit support of their accomplices in Abuja in 2018 mindlessly vandalized the building after they attempted to sell the multi-million naira complex to a former governor before they were stopped by the congress. The rest is now history.
“The union wishes to thank everyone who has in one way or the other supported our efforts towards making this dream a reality. We appreciate you immensely.
“The leadership of Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in a special way, wishes to thank members of our noble union for their sacrifices, support and cooperation, all of which contributed to our achieving this milestone.
“Our prayer is that, God in His infinite mercy and love will massively reward everyone that has put as much as a kobo into our renovation project, and continue to keep us all strong and formidable, to achieve greater goals and restore in full, the dignity and glory of the NUJ, Imo State Council.
After the commissioning all future activities of the union and its members will no longer hold outside the complex”.
