The government of Imo State under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodinma has given its indication to liaise and work together with the state branch of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to ensure public safety on our roads.

This indication was made public by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Safety, Hon Prince Ugochukwu Nzekwe, while addressing officers and men of the Command, yesterday when he visited their Owerri office in continuation of visits to agencies and parastatals under his office.

He appealed to the Imo State Command to liaise with various transport unions in the state, in order to sensitize their drivers to ensure absolute compliance with the prevailing measures put in place to curb the Covid-19 virus and also advised the sector commander to educate his men and instill discipline on the erring ones not to aid and abate any breach of public safety protocols in the state.

Hon. Nzekwe who was received earlier by the Sector Commander, Roland Onamusi disclosed that the purpose of the visit is to build synergy and partnership between the government of Imo State and the FRSC in the area of public safety.

The Special Adviser on Public Safety stated that the Governor, His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma places premium on public safety, especially in the fight against illicit and prohibited drugs, and abuse of  alcohol consumption which poses serious threat to road safety, as much as the health of the consumers.

Hon. Nzekwe informed the FRSC that the use of forged vehicle documents, lack of adequate database, and fake vehicle number plates are all factors inhibiting public safety, since armed robbers resort to the use of such avenues to perpetrate crimes against members of the public.

As part of the highlights of the visit, and in the effort to contain the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, the state government initiated a review of safety measures for drivers, passengers and commuters, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission.

The meeting highlighted the need for drivers and passengers and other road users to observe laid down rules on social distancing, the use of sanitizers and other preventive measures.
