A Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Nigeria under the auspices of “Konrad Adenauer Stiftuna”, a German foundation has concluded a one day seminar for Professionals and Civil Society Organization (CSO) in Imo state with emphasis on social security in the states of Nigeria. With the theme, “strategies for opinion leaders/molders to influence the establishment of social system at state levels in Nigeria”, the seminar was held in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the seminar held at Rockview Hotel, Owerri, on Monday November 5, 2018, participants drawn from different segments of the society in the state after extensive discussion, resolved to form a forum named “Forum of Opinion Leaders/molders, that will advocatefor the sustenance of social security in the state and to draft an action plan for the forum with monitoring and evaluation frame work. They also resolved to engage other stakeholders and mobilize them for action, in a bid to deepen democracy and good governance.

In the communiqué signed on behalf of other 26 participants by the conveners of the forum, Mrs Grace Emejuru, and Barr Wisom Durueke, of Centre for Peace Across Boarders, they reiterated their commitment to actively participate in the advocacy campaign for the establishment of functional and sustainable social security system in Imo state.

The participants resolved to hold inaugural/planning meetings in a forthright to decide future dates to create mailing list, whatsapp group and regulatory report of activities to Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, while building capacity of key actors at the community level to carry out sensitization and awareness of citizens using local dialect through community social mobilization, and mass media advocacy.

The 26 participants drawn from labour unions, employers’ association, teachers association, women association, youth association, business outfits and others including the Nigeria Bar Association, Nigeria Medical Association, Nigeria Union of Journalists, government agencies, civil society organizations as well as religious and traditional institutions also resolved to engage critically and constructively the decision makers advocating for inclusion of social security in manifestoes of political actors ahead of 2019 elections.

They will also advocate for a workable comprehensive social security law with it’s local content, addressing all issues/gaps in existing laws in Imo state to the benefit of both public and private sectors. While observing that the seminar is part of KAs vision for Nigeria in promoting democracy, rule of law, good governance and prosperity for all.
