The 7th Legislative Assembly of Owerri Municipal Council led by Rt. Hon. Justice Chijioke Soronnadi, adopted three motions on three important areas in their last sitting.
The motions include: motion seeking to conduct Town Union Elections in all the autonomous communities in Owerri Municipal Council; Motion for the Renaming, Renovating and Equipping the Health Centre in Azuzi Ward 1 and Motion for a Vote of confidence on the Executive Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council, Hon. Chidiebere Emereibe, on his 100 days in Office.
Interacting with newsmen after their sitting, the Legislative Leader, Rt.Hon. Soronnadi, stated that the first motion sponsored by Rt. Hon. Osinachi Agbugba of Ikenegbu Ward 1 was aimed at promoting and instituting an effective democratic system of administration in all the Town Unions with a view to ending the prolonged use of interim administrations by the autonomous communities in Owerri Municipal Council.
The motion sponsored by the Legislative Council as disclosed by the Leader, would foster peace, harmony and mutual co-existence in the municipality and enhance grassroots governance, community development and conflict resolution.
The motion on Town Union election in the municipality, according to the Leader of the Legislative Council, frowned at the absence of elected leadership in all the communities which could brew tension, lack of accountability and inefficiency in handling community affairs.
He also stressed that the motion in question called on the Council Chairman, Hon. Emereibe, to be in touch with all the traditional rulers in Owerri Municipal Council and other relevant authorities to put up a time table for the immediate conduct of the town union elections.
In the same vein, the motion was used to call on the Chairman to direct all the executive members of all the Caretaker Committees not to take major financial decisions before the conduct of the proposed elections that would usher in democratically elected administrations, adding that the elections will be observed by security agencies and other government relevant bodies.
Meanwhile, the remaining five Co-sponsors of the adopted motion include: Hon. Christopher Onyenwere, Hon. Iwuchukwu Sylvester Ifeanyi, Hon. Amadi Ejike Emmanuel, Hon. Collins Obih and Hon.Ahurumibe Paul.
Continuing, the leader noted that the second motion on the Renaming, Renovating and Equipping of the Health Centre in Azuzi Ward 1 was sponsored by Hon. Amadi Ejike Emmanuel representing the Ward at the Legislative House and the following six co- sponsors: Hon. Christopher Onyenwere, Hon. Rt. Mba Nkenna, Hon. Chika Collins, Hon. Iwuchukwu Sylvester Ifeanyi, Hon. Ahurumibe Paul and Hon.Nnoaham Kelechi.
Disclosing this to the media, Hon. Soronnadi stated that the presenter of the motion stressed the need to have a well equipped and functional modern community based health centre that would regularly render quality health services to the people of Azuzi Ward 1.
Soronnadi stated that the sponsor of the motion, Hon. Amadi, reiterated that the present name of the Health Centre –Water Side Health Clinic, Amaigbo/Oparanozie street, Owerri, should be changed to “Umuonyeche Health Centre, Amaigbo/Oparanozie street, which reflects the true identity and heritage of the host community.
The motion also advocated that the Health Centre should be adequately stocked with drugs and medical supplies to ensure efficient service delivery.
In a similar development, the Legislative Council passed a third motion for a vote of confidence on the Executive Chairman of Owerri Municipal Council, Hon Chidiebere Emereibe, for his leadership dexterity, vision and commitment to purposeful administration since his assumption of office.
The motion, according to the Leader, was sponsored by Hon. Christopher Onyenwere and co- sponsored by eight other members with a view to commending the chairman’s passionate commitment to executing people-oriented projects for the good of the indigenes and residents of Owerri Municipal Council within a short period in office, stressing that his achievements could not have been possible without the inputs of his Deputy, Hon. Sir Lawrence Okoye, the Secretary of the council, Hon. Hillary Uche Ebere and the Supervisors. The passed motion also indicated that the transparency, accountability and undiluted dedication to good governance are the propelling ingredients in the achievements recorded..
The Legislative Council used the motions passed to urge the Chairman and his administrative team to sustain the tempo in the LGA, asserting that motions should be communicated to the governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, the Imo State House of Assembly and the general public to appreciate the good governance in the municipality.
The leader applauded the chairman for this achievements within his 100 days in office.
