Rev. Fr. Prof. Jerome Okonkwo, a respected Catholic priest and scholar, has expressed deep appreciation for Governor Hope Uzodimma’s efforts in reviving the Ahịajọkụ festival and lecture series. Speaking as a guest on Darling FM Owerri during the Ahịajọkụ Half Hour program on Monday, the Arondizuogu-born cleric praised the governor for restoring an essential element of Igbo tradition and culture. Fr. Okonkwo highlighted the importance of the festival, describing it as a significant reflection of the Igbo people’s rich heritage.

In his remarks, the priest condemned the actions of previous administrations in Imo State for abandoning the festival, noting that such neglect has dealt a blow to the cultural identity of the Igbo people. “It is a disaster that previous governments in this state allowed the Ahịajọkụ festival to be destroyed,” he stated. He emphasized that the festival not only celebrates agricultural heritage but also embodies the intellectual and philosophical roots of the Igbo people.

Rev. Fr. Okonkwo, an advocate of Igbo cultural revival, reiterated the need for the people to return to their traditions. He stressed that the Ahịajọkụ festival serves as a symbol of the deep connection between the Igbo people and their ancestral roots. “Our people must go back to their tradition and cultural roots, which Ahịajọkụ represents,” he urged, calling on the Igbo community to fully embrace the revival.

The cleric also underscored the significance of the Ahịajọkụ lecture series, which he described as a critical platform for intellectual discourse on Igbo philosophy, thought system, worldview, and identity. He disclosed that he had brought a compilation of previous Ahịajọkụ lectures to the radio studio as a testament to his commitment to preserving and promoting the rich intellectual heritage the festival has fostered over the years.

According to Fr. Okonkwo, the lectures have historically offered profound insights into the Igbo worldview, encouraging deep reflection on the values, beliefs, and philosophies that shape the Igbo identity. He praised the efforts of past contributors to the lecture series, noting that their works have made significant contributions to understanding the Igbo people’s unique cultural outlook.

Concluding his remarks, Rev. Fr. Okonkwo once again thanked Governor Uzodimma for his dedication to restoring the Ahịajọkụ festival, urging the people of Imo State and the wider Igbo community to support the governor’s efforts in ensuring the continuity of this vital cultural tradition.
