Orlu community in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State has cried out over the deplorable condition of Mbonu Ojike Memorial Secondary School, Orlu, popularly called Ojike Memorial Secondary School, which according to them has become a death trap that poses great danger to the lives of teachers and students.

A community leader, Chief Kevin Odoemenam, who commented on the development in a chat wih  this reporter, said, it is unfortunate that a school named after an illustrious and reputable man like Mbonu Ojike could be abandoned to be dilapidated to the extent of being such an eyesore.

He noted that if nothing is done urgently to address the situation, the wind may one day blow off the roof and result in severe consequences.

He expressed concern about the fate of teachers and students of the school whose continued exposure to such unhealthy  conditions on a daily basis except weekends poses great danger to their lives as anything can happen.

Continuing, he said, “for instance all the staircases in the school are without handrails, while the classrooms are always flooded whenever it rains, giving room for the incubation of infectious germs and water borne diseases”.

He called on the state government and other stakeholders to step in urgently to avoid a situation where the building will collapse and result in  fatality.

Others who spoke in the same vein, also expressed  concern over  the situation which they said is not only disappointing, but also worrisome, considering the level of dilapidation which is absolutely unsafe for the students and their teachers.
