The last may not have been heard about one Ifeanyi Nwangwma, a staff of StarPost Express Newspaper who was almost lynched by a mob for sneaking into the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State Council along Port Harcourt Road and stole the union’s properties.
According to eyewitness report, “Nwanguma who monitored the movement of people in the secretariat not knowing that he was being watched, sneaked in with a vehicle when he thought that the coast was clear. Immediately he entered, he started parking the properties of the union, including those in the newly commissioned cyber café. Unfortunately for him, as he was bringing out the properties and loading them inside the hired vehicle he came with those who saw him, raised alarm and drew the attention of members of the union who rushed to the scene. At this point, they locked the gate and threatened to lynch Nwanguma who sensed danger and quickly got in touch with the former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, who alerted the New Owerri Police Station, that came to the scene of the incident, took Nwanguma, away alongside the properties he had already packed in his vehicle to the station”.
However when the DPO of New Owerri Police started acting funny by showing signs of compromise, the union reached the Commissioner of Police, who directed the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID, where Nwanguma was subsequently arrested and detained alongside the stolen properties that will serve as evidence, before he was granted bail.
A police source who does not his name in print said the police is waiting for the leadership of the NUJ before the matter will be charged to court.
Recall, that the NUJ in Imo State, had previously accused Emelumba of supporting hoodlums and criminal elements who are perpetrating all kinds of ignoble acts in the union while at the same time, parading themselves as Journalists. “This, particular incident has confirmed all we said and are still saying”.
