– Calls For Immediate Reconstitution Of Exco
The Peoples Democratic Party PDP, has expressed dismay that governance in Imo State has been put in abeyance since Governor Hope Uzodinma dissolved the State Expanded Executive Council on January, 26, 2024.
The party, in a release signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mazi Emenike Nmeregini, condemned what it referred to as the Governor’s non challant and lackadaisical attitude to issues of utmost importance, while deploying enormous time, energy and resources towards frivolous issues that do not add value to the welfare and well being of Imo people whose mandate and resources he is wasting.
The release dated January, 30, 2024, reads in part, “It is 14 days running, since the business of governance has been put on hold in Imo State. It would be recalled that the State Expanded Executive Council was dissolved on the Jan 26, 2024 by the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma but till date, Imo State operates without Executive Council, as the Governor has not reconstituted any yet.
The State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP therefore condemns this act of sudden break in administrative process with its concomitant breach in good governance delivery in the State.
The party therefore calls on the Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimna to make haste and reconstitute the State Exco to commence immediate rehabilitation of the already battered and dilapidated Sectors in the State.
Nature they say, abhors vacuum. Indeed, the State does not need this unnecessary break at a time all structures in the State have collapsed. Already there is general despondence across the State as majority of the populace are gnashing their teeth due to excruciating pains of hunger occasioned by a rudderless Administration.
The present state of the Imo State is most deplorable and calls for immediate attention to save it from further deterioration and possible backlash.
Elections have come and gone. Notwithstanding that the poll results are still challenged in the Courts, it does not rule out the fact that the real business of governance has to continue with immediate effect. It is quite evident that the first a big sham and general disappointment. Now should have been the time for the newly inaugurated Governor to properly begin the proverbial Rebuilding, Reconstruction and, Rehabilitation he promised Imo people that has remained a mirage after four years.
The Governor should sit down for real governance and reduce his frequent shuttles and residence in Abuja, abandoning the State all the time. The organs of Government must be working. The Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) must be effectively functional. Our Local Government system has suffered tremendous neglect and degradation and this time should be revived by first holding a Local Government Election.
Therefore, the Governor must reconstitute the State Executive Council and allow the members enough latitude to operate. The huge concentration of powers in the office of the Governor needs to be revisited and unbundled in line with the principles of Devolution of power. Authorities and responsibilities of governance must be truly domiciled with the appropriate arms and Agencies of Government. This will make for effective checks and balances and limit the excesses of over burden and centralization of powers in Douglas House, Owerri.
More constructive measures should be taken to quell the menace of insecurity in the State. Imo State has had enough of criminality and bloodbath. What the State needs now is absolute tranquility to attract investments and promote existing businesses. Government must be serious in this regard”.
