Mayor Eze condemns killings at Okporo, Orlu – Calls on govt to bring perpetrators to book
A former member of the House of Representatives for Orlu, Orsu and Oru East federal Constituency, Hon Mayor Eze has condemned in its entirety the persistent killing of presumably innocent people in Orlu and its environs and called on the State government to, as a matter of urgency address the situation without further delay. The lawmaker who was also a two term Chairman of Orlu local government area stated this in a release he issued in respect of the recent shootings at Okporo, Orlu that led to the death of unconfirmed number of persons while many others sustained injuries.
The former lawmaker in the release which he personally signed said, ‘’ it is very saddening and unfortunate that the persistent killings in Orlu and environs have continued unabated with attendant loss of innocent lives which has brought fear to all and made so many people to relocate.
“On Wednesday November, 23, 2022 there were report of the sporadic gunshots at Orie Okporo market that reportedly resulted in the loss of lives.
“Attempts to confirms the number of deaths and other casualties are still ongoing as conflicting figures are gotten from different sources.
“There are also disturbing allegation of friends and relatives of hospitalized victims being flagrantly arrested while visiting them in the hospital. If this is true, those arrested in such questionable manner should be released without further delay or allowed access to their families if they have questions to answer.
“While condemning criminality in very strong terms, the prevailing situation where people who are presumably innocent are gunned down extra-judicially should not be allowed. This is unacceptable and capable of further inflaming the already volatile situation.
The government should, as a matter of urgency investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators of this and other extra-judicial killings to book’’.
He urged the three autonomous communities of Okporo clan, Isiala, Amanator and Udogadi to remain calm and law abiding while the government conducts thorough investigation.
He also called on the State government to issue a statement on the unwarranted killings. This, he said, will calm the frayed nerves of the traumatized citizens and residents of the area, stressing that palpable fear anxiety and tension have enveloped the three autonomous communities and environs.
