-Frowns At Unethical Practice
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Imo State council, has expressed its intention to organize a 3-month free computer training for journalists in the state.
The secretary of the union,led by Comrade Precious Nwadike disclosed this shortly after a virtual meeting of the union in Owerri, the state capital recently, said, it has become necessary in view of societal changes.
According to him, “there is a need for periodic training and retraining of media practitioners to update their knowledge in line with international best standards. We have concluded arrangements with the experts who will handle the exercise”. He also stated that, aside from the hands on deck training, participants will be groomed in the areas of editing and adherence to professional ethics.
Responding to a question about when the programme will commence, Ori Martin, said, it is expected to start in June and will be coordinated by Austin Agwulonu, an Owerri based journalist who has a very good knowledge of computer use and appreciation.
Some journalists who reacted to the development expressed delight. They described it as a visionary step that is not only commendable but should be supported by all well meaning people. “It is a very timely decision that should be supported by all, considering the societal changes and the impact of technology in virtually all aspects of human endeavour”.
They commended the leadership of Imo NUJ for the visionary task which they said will definitely upgrade journalism practice in the state.
