– Wants Ihekweme Charged To Court
Renowned broadcaster and human rights activist Mazi Chinonso Uba (Nonso Nkwa) has called on the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma to desist from using operatives of the Tiger Base Unit of the Imo State Police Command to harass and intimidate Imo people for expressing their views in a democratic dispensation.
He also condemned in very strong terms the continued detention of Dr Fabian Ihekweme, a former Commissioner for Foreign Affairs in Uzodinma’s cabinet, adding that Ihekweme should be released without further delay or be arrainged in court for whatever offence the government thinks he committed.
Ihekweme was arrested at Abuja by Tiger Base Operatives and brought to Owerri, the Imo State capital where he has been detained since then.
Nonso Nkwa, who stated this in a video that has been trending since January, 24, noted that Ihekweme’s continued detention without trial amounts to deliberate violation of human rights.
The Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area born human rights activist maintained that, “Omu, as fondly called, has been detained beyond the constitutionally approved 48 hours without being charged to court.
He therefore enjoined the state government to arraign him in court without further delay pointing out that it is only the court that will determine whether he would remain in custody or not.
Nonsonkwa cautioned the state government against trampling on the rights of Imo citizens.
He assured the government of Gov Hope Uzodimma that it cannot stop freedom of speech in the state by cowing outspoken citizens with illegal detention.
He also appealed to all relevant bodies including the National Human Rights Commission to step into the matter with a view to ensuring that the right thing is done.
Recall that Nonso Nkwa himself was also arrested in like manner along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri and was detained for 52 days before he was released few weeks ago.
