Fabian Ihekweme, former Commissioner for Foreign Affairs in Governor Hope Uzodinma’s cabinet has regained his freedom.
Ihekweme, who hails from Obowo Local Government Area of the state, was arrested in his Abuja residence and brought to Owerri by Operatives of the Tiger Base Unit of the Imo State Police Command who kept him in their custody for several weeks until he was released on Tuesday, January, 27, 2025.
A Government House source who does not want his name in print told this newspaper that Ihekweme’s release followed persistent agitation by human rights activists who stressed that he had been held much longer than the law permits. Some leaders and stakeholders in Okigwe zone also reached out to the Governor who gave conditions for his release including tendering an unreserved apology.
On this note, Ihekweme, who many have described as a feather weight activist who lacks the capacity to stick to his convictions, easily succumbed and apologized in writing on Tuesday and was released the same day.
A human rights activist named Victor Osuji, while reacting to the development said, “Governor Uzodinma should not think that he can intimidate and clamp down on the opposition because of people like Ihekweme who lack principle and the capacity to stick to their convictions.”
Ihekweme, in a letter of apology dated January, 27, 2025, he addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, with the Caption, “UNDERTAKING TO BE of GOOD BEHAVIOUR”, said, “I Dr Fabran the Ihekeme a native of Mgbomo Alike in Obowo LGA, do hereby undertake to be of good behavior to Imo State government and to refrain from any conduct likely to cause breach of peace. I also promise to refrain from any article that is capable of Inciting the general public against the government
I hereby wish to categorically state, that I regret the inciting articles I had written against the government which are fallacious and unverifiable. I wish also to state clearly that the governor still remains my friend and leader.
I wish to finally thank the Nigerian Police force and the team of officers who investigated my matter for being highly professional. Even when I was sick, they showed so much concern and displayed high level of professionalism by providing adequate medical attention for me. Kudos to Tiger base”.
