The Senior Special Assistant to Imo State Governor, Hon. Charles Ebonuma (Onyeze) has commended the Imo State House of Assembly for the passage of a bill prohibiting discrimination against Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

The Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday 16th October, 2024 passed a bill prohibiting discrimination against Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). 

The bill which was sponsored by Hon. Engr. Innocent Ikpamezie, the Member representing Mbaitoli State Constituency, provides for social justice and inclusion, rights for equal opportunities, education, healthcare, employment and public infrastructure amongst Persons With Disabilities.

The bill also provides legal recourse to hold accountable any individual or institution that discriminates against or denies PWDs their fundamental rights as Imo citizens.

Hon. Ebonuma speaking in Owerri on Wednesday 23rd October, 2024, extolled the 10th Assembly under the viable leadership of Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe for recording numerous legislative successes since its emergence and for its visible fight against any form of partiality, favouritism, subjugation or magnilization of any individual or group. 

 He applauded the Member representing Mbaitoli State Constituency, Hon. Engr. Innocent Ikpamezie for sponsoring the disability rights bill which he said has further cemented their entitlement to their rights at all levels of social and economic planning.

Ebonuma noted that the bill has greatly promoted, protected and ensured the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all Imo persons with disabilities, and promoted respect for their inherent dignity. 

He stated that the Imo Special Citizens are excited, knowing that they shall not be discriminated against on the ground of their disability by any person or institution in the state in any manner or circumstances.

He appealed to the Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma to sign the bill into law to authenticate their full rights in the state, stressing that Imo disabled communities will ever remain grateful to him for giving them that true sense of belonging they deserve as Imo citizens.
