Former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,(NUJ), Imo State Council, Dr Fidel Onyeneke, who was also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Orientation, has called on Nigerians to take necessary precautionary measures to avoid flooding and attendant hazards as the rainy season sets in.
Onyeneke who stated this in Owerri on Monday, while reacting to the perennial rainfall that has barred it’s fangs in different parts of the country including Imo State in the past few-days, stressed the need for citizens to be at alert and remove all debris that may cause the flooding of their residential areas.
He advised that all rubbish and other materials blocking the water ways in the various towns and communities should be cleared.
The former Imo NUJ boss, expressed dismay that rather than taking necessary steps to pre-empt impending flood disaster, most residents are exhibiting non challant attitude, hence they are often taken unawares by the menace.
“There is need to clear all bushes and desilt all drainages, and open all water channels in our various neigbourhoods, especially in the flood prone areas”.
He also appealed to the state and local governments to provide vulnerable communities with the necessary machinery and manpower to enable them prevent the impending flood and associated problems before it becomes late.
