More facts have emerged about why the police arrested the National Chairman of Labour Party, Barr Julius Abure in Benin, the Edo State capital, yesterday.
Contrary to speculations making the round, the All Progressive Congress, masterminded the arrest by inciting some members of Abure’s party to write what many have described as frivolous petitions to the police, information available to our news desk indicate that some members of Labour Party, including one Oluchi, who is the National Treasurer of Labour Party wrote petitions to the police, claiming that Abure collected different sums of money from them ahead of the party’s primaries and promised to ensure that they were given tickets, which they eventually did not get.
A reliable source also disclosed that attempts were made to rope the Presidential candidate of Labour, Peter Obi into the scandal, prompting him to go on air to give detailed account of how he prosecuted his campaign how much he got and how it was spent.
“When Obi was asked about the party’s income and expenditure, he said an Auditor has been engaged to look into that, and inform the party. This negated their plan to dent Obi’s impeccable record by dragging his name into the scandal”.
A police source who does not want his name mentioned said, “Abure had earlier been invited severally by the police to clarify issues but he declined all the invitations. Hence, the police had no option then to trail him to Edo State where he was arrested and humiliated”.
