– Describe Elections As Most Fraudulent
–Renew Call For Her Sack Ahead Of Nov 11 Governorship Poll
As a build up to the November, 11, governorship election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Imo State, Prof Sylvia Agu, on Wednesday engaged selected journalists qnd other stakeholders in a media briefing.
The briefing which was aimed at acquainting journalists with the preparedness of the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC for the forth coming election, at a point, became Prof Agu’s albatross, as some of the journalists present insisted that she justifies the declaration of the 27 candidates of the All Progressive Congress APC as winners, even when reports published in their various media houses showed that the election was massively rigged.
They also queried why she has become a regular visitor to the Imo State Government House.
It was initially alleged that, “as a result of the alarm raised by some people that the Resident Electoral Commissioner who was said to have been recommended for her current assignment in Imo State by her relation, the South East Chairman of the APC, has her allegiance to APC and dances to the whims and caprices of the governor of Imo state.
To this end, the chat she had with journalists became soured as the media practitioners used the opportunity to vent their anger on the REC, who they described as a disgrace to the academia.
It was also gathered that since after the election, Prof Agu has been avoiding the media as well as ignoring their calls. Hence, the press briefing was the only opportunity they had to interact with her.
Meanwhile, some of the leaders of Civil society organizations in Imo who spoke on condition of anonymity, shortly after the media parley with the REC have renewed their call for the sack of the REC.They maintain that with Agu as Resident Electoral Commissioner,it will be difficult to record a transparent election in November 11,2023.
The NGOs regretted that despite all the petitions sent to the Chairman of the Commission, they have refused to sack the woman.”As far as she remains REC,Imo people should not bother to vote unless they will be vigilant enough to vote and protect their votes”,one of them stated.
