The Senator representing Imo East Senatorial zone in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has moved a motion for concerted effort to be made towards sensitizing, educating and preparing the people to prevent the outbreak of Anthrax disease in Nigeria.
The Senator in the Motion he moved on the floor of the red chambers noted that there is an outbreak of the deadly zoo-notic bacterium in some countries across the ECOWAS region, including Ghana and Togo.
Ezenwa, also expressed concern that though, Nigeria is yet to record any suspected or confirmed case, the outbreak in Ghana poses a great public health risk to Nigeria due to the highly transmissible nature of the disease.
He therefore resolved that the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Federal Ministry of Health be mandated to embark on nationwide vaccination of livestock with the anthrax pore vaccine, especially within the states around the country’s borders.
