Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland and Iceland, Hon Mrs Ijeoma Arimanwa Obiezu recently met with her host country’s President, His Excellency, Michael D. Higgins at the Presidential Residence, Aras an Uachtarain, where she submitted her letter of credence.
During their interaction, Amb Obiezu, who prior to her ambassadorial appointment, had held several positions of trust and responsibility, including the Chairman of Ideato North LGA, emphasized her readiness to engage in discussions and activities that will strengthen and enhance the existing cordial relationship between the two countries, especially in the areas of trade and investment.
She also stressed the need for more premium to be placed on bilateral cooperation which in her opinion will enhance effective and result-oriented relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland more than the multilateral approach.
Obiezu also requested that a formal agreement be made on Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) where both countries have mutual interest.
Responding, President Higgins commended President Muhammadu Buhari for aligning with the 35% Affirmative Action and best global practices of giving women opportunities to showcase their inate abilities and potentials for the growth, development and enhancement of the society.
He recalled the age long relationship between the two countries which dates back to the post-independence era and assured Ambassador Obiezu of his willingness to support and ensure that she succeeds in her new assignment.
Some of the important personalities present at the dinner at Amb Obieszu’s residence in commemoration of the event include, Arch Bishop Jude Okoro Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the African Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the Moroccan Ambassador, the South African Ambassador, Kenyan Ambassador, Chief of Protocol, Department of Foreign Affairs, some officials of the protocol division, the NIDO the Nigerian community, friends and well wishers.
Amb Obiezu expressed appreciation to God who she said has been faithful, to her stressing that the journey which has started in earnest will yield desired result.
