A 3 story building under construction in Oru Ahiara Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA yesterday evening collapsed.
This happened two days after an indigene of the area raised alarm over the poor condition of the building on the social media. Before, the building collapsed, he reported that cracks were seen in different parts of the building and beckoned on the Ahiazu Development Authority and other government agencies that control and supervise building construction to investigate the building but all to no avail.
It was gathered that workers at the site come from Aba, Abia State and luckily none of them was around when the tragedy occurred and no casualty was recorded as at the press time.
The building was said to have been started 2 years ago and was constructed on top of an old ground water tank which was not well sandfilled before commencencing the construction. And as at press time, the owner of the collapsed building and the engineer handling the construction are yet to be located.
Other eye witnesses in the area revealed that the building may have collapsed as a result of the heavy rainfall witnessed in the area yesterday and the use of substandard materials in constructing the said three story building.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of Ahiazu Mbaise Police Division, CSP Chris Odoh, stated that his office was yet to get any official report about the incident.
