The alarming rate of insecurity in the state that has resulted in incessant killings, arson, a wanton destruction of property and other vices seems to have taken a frightening dimension as the Imo State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Iyke Umeh and his friend, Hon Dominic Uzowuru, Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter Party Affairs were attacked by gunmen at a point close to the Orji branch of Access Bank around 8.30pm last Sunday.
A police source who pleaded anonymity told this reporter that Iyke Umeh who was cruising in an unbranded vehicle, closely followed by a Hilux vehicle had gone to drop his friend and colleague Uzowuru when they were waylaid by persons who shot at them.
The source further revealed that the duo had earlier attended a service of songs for their departed colleague, Barr Austin Nnawuihe, who was until his death, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing.
Iyke Umeh who was shot on the thigh and finger while Uzowuru who escaped unhurt are both hospitalized for medical attention and observation respectively. There are also reports that most top officials of the state government are presently scared and apprehensive and have gone into hiding, while others have made caution their watch word”.
Some concerned Imolites who commented on the prevailing insecurity in the state and most of the South East States, described it as an indication of leadership failure on the part of the governors who have failed to live up to expectation as Chief Security Officers of their various states. They also attributed the prevailing turbulence to youth restiveness arising from idleness, unemployment and lack of sincerity on the part of the government to provide enabling environment for the youths to thrive by introducing youth friendly programmes and policies.
Meanwhile, it was later gathered at the time of filling this report, that gunmen also invaded the Okigwe police area command and killed 5 policemen while one officer was declared missing, according to a police source.
Here in Owerri, residents of Amawusa, Douglas, Mbaise roads had a sleepless night as unknown gunmen were seen walking and shooting around the areas unhindered.
An unconfirmed report has it that military checkpoint at Amawusa was also attacked.Though It was not clear if they were casualties but a 30minutes video that circulated on the social media captured the unknown gunmen advancing to the First bank area of Douglas Road.
