The Council of Vice Presidents of the Student Union Governments (SUGs) in Imo state, led by Jennifer Nwohiri Chiamaka, yesterday, 27th day of May, 2019, paid a solidarity visit to Hon. Mrs Ngozi Obiefule, member-elect for Isu LGA in her Owerri residence and endorsed her for Imo House of Assembly speaker.
The council which comprises of the Vice Presidents of all the tertiary institutions in Imo state, threw their support for Hon. Obiefule, on her ambition to vie for the speakership position of Imo House of Assembly.
While pouring encomiums on her, they stated that Hon. Obiefule has proven herself to be a great woman in different dimensions, going by track record.
They further stated that, she is a woman of substance who has contributed positively in moving our society forward and has motivated other women to realize that everything is possible, if you put your mind to it and that what a man can do, a woman can do it better.
They appreciated her for the role she played as the “Mayor of Akacity” and her achievements so far in Isu LGA and Imo state as a whole.
In recognition of her inspiration, personality and her character which they admitted to be worthy of emulation, they pleaded that she becomes their mentor, a matron to turn to for advices and encouragement.
Reacting to their remarks, Hon. Mrs Obiefule appreciated their visit and said, it shows that in the next few years, we are going to have women who will take politics seriously.
She cited an example,”when I told the Eze of my community, that I wanted to vie for Imo House of Assembly, the Eze told me that Isu is not ready for a woman to represent them”.
According to Obiefule, this motivated her the more because, she hates the word “impossibility” and has shown them that it is possible and Isu is ready for a woman to represent them. She added that being a woman is not a taboo and that she is proud to be a woman.
She said, “female speakers are believed to be more stable and tend to make everyone feel at home. They are not overly greedy, not interested in building mansions or acquiring many lands, they are satisfied with the few they have, and you won’t see a woman want to buy the whole Owerri and properties here and there. They are just contented with what they have, not grapping as her male counterparts for their many generations”,Obiefuled Opined.
She added that, the politics she loves to play “is the politics of the future, doing something that can outlive her, not politics of what we can get, but something we can be remembered for after we are gone and Isu can never forget that she existed”.
She encouraged the women among them to start taking active interest in politics because women are nurtural in quality which when carried into legislation, will be outstanding.
