The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Imo State chapter, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha has scored another fist with the appointment of Hon. Gerald Irona as his running mate for the 2019 elections.
According to a terse release from the Ihedioha campaign organization, dated October 22, 2018 and signed by the Director-General, Dr. Vin Udokwu, the nomination and confirmation of Irona, followed wide consultation with relevant stakeholders across the state.
Gerald Irona, a former member of the Federal House of Representatives for Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal constituency, was until his appointment, the PDP National Deputy Financial Secretary. He was also a member of Imo State House of Assembly between 1999 and 2003 when he chaired the house committee on Petroleum, Environment and Energy. Thereafter, he was appointed chairman of Oguta LGA Transition Committee by Governor Achike Udenwa and later elected the executive chairman of Oguta LGA between 2004 and 2007. His foray into politics started in 1996 when he was elected, Councilor of Oguta Ward A.
An alumnus of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, Irona holds a HND in chemical engineering, and stared his academic career at Oguta when he joined Priscilla Memorial Secondary School between 1980 and 1985. Unlike Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha who is a Knight of the Anglican Communion, Irona is a devout Catholic whose profound knowledge of governance and inter-governmental relations will be of relevance to the PDP administration if elected.
