The ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which held throughout the 774 LGAs in the country last Saturday May 5, 2018, took a dramatic turn in Obowo LGA, home of Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor. Few days to the exercise, leaders of the party in the area led by one Chief Emeka Williams passed a vote of no confidence on the House of Representatives member, Chike Okafor.
He was accused of anti party activities and setting up structure for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), ostensibly on the promptings and directives of his political mentor, “Owelle Rochas Okorocha”.
At the ward congress of APC in Obowo, while the Emeka Williams group held their congress at Central School Umuariam, Deacon Chike Okafor’s men led by Hon. Kennedy Ibe of Imo state House of Assembly assembled at Ekeja Ehume market square where they waited endlessly for the INEC observers and APC congress nomination forms. When they could not get any, they induced the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Obowo who they alleged is answerable to Chike Okafor, to provide them cover with which they stormed the party office in the areas and completely vandalized the furniture and other official items kept there.
Meanwhile the Chief Lawrence Osuagwu led Obowo APC had successfully returned him as the party Chairman in a well attended congress which took place at Umariam Central School. At Okenalogho ward where both Chilie Okafor and Kennedy Ibe come from, the faction loyal to Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume successfully conducted the congress and returned one Chief Emeka Ukaegbu as ward chairman while the attempt by Hons. Okafor and Ibeh to elect Nze City Okafor in a parallel structure as ward chairman fell like a pack of cards, leading to the purported announcement of a timid Ekeja market butcher as ward Chairman, of Okenalogho Obowo with several men of timber and caliber including Barr. Greg Ihejirika, to mention just a few.
Addressing the press at the venue of the exercise, a prominent politician in the place, Hon. Ernest Chukwuocha blamed Chike Okafor for the factionalization of in APC Obowo. He explained that Chike Okafor became in unaccessible and boastful, the moment he was elected into the federal House of Representatives thus neglecting the people who felt assisted him. He assured that those who abandoned by Chike Okafor have now revenged.
